January's book selection

We had 4 whole votes! (That must mean that at least 3 people other than me read this!) Since we had a tie, we'll choose both books. You can read either one or both (since we have till January). The Worthing Chronicle by Orson Scott Card and/or Molakai by Alan Brennert.

Also, if anyone comes across a book that you'd like to see as a reading selection here, please post it!

There's a poll on the left...vote for which book you'd like to read for our January meeting. The poll closes on November 20th at midnight, so put your vote in before then!

New Book Suggestions...

Okay, so I guess the last book club kinda bombed. I was out of town, unfortunately, so I apologize for that. A Train to Potevka is an excellent book and an easy read, for those who might still be interrested in reading it. It's also perfect for this time of year.

So, moving on...we need a new book suggestion. I heard that Kristanne had a couple--feel free to post them, and hopefully we can get input and read something that everyone is interested in.

One that I have not read (so I can't vouch for the content), but is on my "to-read-list" is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Another one that I just very recently (today) finished is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, but it does have swear words. (Short synopsis: it's about a foster girl growing up in Germany during WWII.)

Other suggestions that I can think of:

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

(Leave suggestions here, in the comments.)

Mike Ramsdell

Mike Ramsdell was in Costco today signing copies of his book, A Train To Potevka. I just had to stop and tell him how fascinating I found his book. And take his picture with my phone. He was very nice, and told me they are making the book into a movie, projected to be out next Thanksgiving. When I was reading the book, I kept thinking it would make a great movie--very fast-paced and full of action. I guess others thought so too. It's going to be a big budget production, too. $40 million, he said. Anyway, had to share this exciting news. If you don't have your own copy, you can find them at Costco for a very good price. (And you might just be able to get an autographed copy!)

New Date: Oct. 25, 10:00 am

We're postponing the date of the book club, since we are having our Visiting Teaching workshop on the 9th--which is going to be fun and exciting!

We will meet after/during the craft group and discuss A Train to Potevka. I still have a copy, if someone wants to borrow it. It's a great and easy read.

A Train To Potevka

If you haven't read A Train To Potevka (by Mike Ramsdell) yet, you still have lots of time--until October. The book is very interesting, and is an easy read. If anyone needs a copy, I have one available. Call or post here (in the comments) and I'll get it to you.

October's Book:

A Train To Potevka by Mike Ramsdell

Mike Ramsdell grew up in Bear River, Utah and attended the University of Utah and the U of U Law School and the Russian Language Institute in Washington, D.C.

A review from a reader in Brigham City:

"... a very personal and human story. The first-person style of writing allows the reader to identify with the author. It has action and intrigue, but the valuable moral lessons throughout make 'A Train To Potevka' a must read. Hopefully, my kids will read it next. I couldn't put it down."

The book club will meet again in October. Please join us to discuss this book and to suggest other books to read.
